MUMBAI: Director Maneesh F Singh is exploring a new frontier in Indian entertainment by attempting to recreate some of the country’s most celebrated mythological stories with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). The filmmaker is working on the concept of using AI tools and emerging technologies to bring legendary Indian epics, including the Ramayana and Mahabharata, into a contemporary visual format.
The project represents an ambitious attempt to combine India’s ancient storytelling traditions with some of the newest technologies available to filmmakers. Rather than treating AI merely as a post-production tool, Singh is looking at how artificial intelligence can become an important part of the creative and visual process.
Indian mythology has traditionally been brought to audiences through theatre, television, cinema, animation and large-scale productions. The Ramayana and Mahabharata, in particular, have inspired generations of filmmakers and television producers. Singh’s proposed approach could offer another interpretation of these stories, using AI-generated environments, characters, visual effects and digital production techniques to recreate the grandeur of ancient India.
The use of AI could potentially allow filmmakers to visualize locations and sequences that would otherwise require enormous production budgets. Ancient kingdoms, celestial worlds, battlefields, forests, palaces and mythological landscapes could be developed digitally, giving the stories a distinctly cinematic scale.
For Singh, the attraction of AI appears to lie not simply in reducing production costs but also in expanding the creative possibilities available to filmmakers. AI-based technologies can assist in conceptualising characters, environments, costumes and visual compositions, while allowing filmmakers to experiment with different artistic interpretations before committing to conventional production.
However, recreating Indian mythology through AI also presents significant challenges. The Ramayana and Mahabharata are not simply fictional adventures; they are deeply embedded in Indian cultural and spiritual traditions. Any modern visual interpretation therefore requires sensitivity toward the source material, its characters and the beliefs associated with them.
Singh’s project could consequently become an interesting experiment in balancing technology with tradition. While AI can generate increasingly sophisticated imagery, the emotional and cultural authenticity of a mythological story still depends on the filmmaker’s understanding of its characters, themes and narrative values.
The filmmaker is already associated with projects across different genres, including films that have dealt with contemporary and socially relevant subjects.
